Why Can’t Cyberpunk 2077 Still Reach 4K Resolution?

Cyberpunk 2077 on next-generation consoles still fails to deliver on one of its promises. The developer of this game, CD Projekt Red, has promised to deliver 4K dynamic resolution plus Ray Tracing capabilities and game performance improvements on PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, but it reportedly isn’t even close to that goal.

CD Projekt Red Failed to Fulfill the Promise

Digital Foundry technical experts have found that the next-generation Cyberpunk 2077 patch is a clear improvement over the backward compatibility version we had before, but can’t meet the resolution targets promised by CD Projekt Red.

The air tracking mode in Cyberpunk 2077 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X seems to work on the original 1440p. Dynamic screen scalability may be in place, according to Digital Foundry, however, all measurements on all platforms yield the same value in each circumstance. This absolutely doesn’t satisfy the proposed dynamic 4K resolution highlighted by CD Projekt Red in its console performance infographic. The Cyberpunk 2077 mode is thankfully a little better, but it still can’t achieve 4K. The PS5 now runs in a dynamic resolution window from 1260p to 1729p, and, after a next-generation update, between 1382p to 1782p is the resolution Xbox Series X now runs in. This is a significant improvement for both consoles; PS5’s resolution used to be around 972p and 1200p, for example, but it’s still far from the target of 2160p and 4K, respectively.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a bit too ambitious a project, though, especially for next-generation consoles. Clearly, the 4K claim of CD Projekt Red was a bit ambitious, and it’s a trap that too many programmers fall into. We’ve seen many other studios claim that the game works in 4K resolution, and can actually hit that target only in ideal scenarios, like looking at the sky.

While it’s easier for users to market 4K than 1440p, we’ve seen that many titles provide intact image quality at that resolution. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Death Stranding, and Ghost of Tsushima work at a lower resolution mode and look extremely comfortable on higher resolution screens. The same goes for Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The Game Has Received Multiple Updates Since Its Release in 2020

The problem is that Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that has previously been criticized for too many promises and serious shortcomings. The next-generation update will undoubtedly fix some of the bridges that the developer burned after the release of the shocking versions for PS4 and Xbox One, but one should avoid falling back into the same traps that got him into trouble.
